Texas Super Lawyer
Joe Stephens has been selected by a blue ribbon panel as a Texas Super Lawyer for many years. His historic court room victories are legendary, and few have enjoyed his success. That is why his peers believe him to be one of the best lawyers in Texas. How are Super Lawyer’s selected?
Statewide Nomination Survey
Super Lawyers is an independent organization which asked thousands of lawyers across Texas to select the very best lawyers that they had personally watched try a case. Lawyers were asked to choose the best lawyer including opposing counsel–because opposing counsel spends more time watching his opponent than other lawyers. Co-counsel is also asked to vote. The goal in the selection process was to choose lawyers based on what you know, not what a lawyer’s reputation is as this is often skewed by media, story telling, and hearsay.
Super Lawyers received over 65,000 nominating votes. Votes from outside a lawyer’s firm carried more weight. Each lawyer was scored based on the results. The scores were tallied.
The Screening Process
If a lawyer did not receive any votes from outside his firm, then that lawyer was eliminated. Those who received votes outside the firm were put on the list. A system was used to make sure that two lawyers did not vote for each other. If a disproportionate number of these ballots were seen, the lawyer was eliminated.
Super Lawyer’s staff then conducted independent reviews of all candiates making sure they had no grievances, and were in good standing with the Texas Bar.
The Blue Ribbon Panel Review
The very best lawyers from around the state were then asked to sit on a panel. This included the lawyers who got the top votes. It also included managing partners from big law firms, and other leaders. These lawyers reviewed the candidates and assigned additional scores.
The Final Selection Process
Lawyers were then ranked according to the tally of all the various scores. The top 5 % of lawyers were included. The remainder were not selected.
